Workshop on «Islamic Manuscript Heritage in Kazakhstan: Research, Preservation and Personnel Training» and International Conference on «Contribution of Kazakhstan to the Development of Islamic Culture» (20-21 June 2018) held in Astana, Kazakhstan

Two scholarly meetings took place in Kazakhstan which were organized by IRCICA jointly with Kazakhstan cultural authorities. The first one, the Workshop on «Islamic Manuscript Heritage in Kazakhstan: Research, Preservation and Personnel Training», was held on 20 June 2018, organized jointly by the National Center of Manuscripts and Rare Books, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Kazakhstan, the Research and Analytical Center for Religious Affairs, Ministry of Religious and Civil Society Affairs, Kazakhstan, and OIC Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA).

The second one was the international conference on “Contribution of Kazakhstan to the Development of Islamic Culture”, organized by the Spiritual Board of the Muslims of Kazakhstan, the Research and Analytical Center for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Religious and Civil Society Affairs of Kazakhstan, and OIC Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA). The venue was the conference hall of Hazret Sultan Mosque, Astana.

Workshop on «Islamic Manuscript Heritage in Kazakhstan: Research, Preservation and Personnel Training»

The Workshop on «Islamic Manuscript Heritage in Kazakhstan: Research, Preservation and Personnel Training» was organized in cooperation with the National Center of Manuscripts and Rare Books, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Kazakhstan and the Research and Analytical Center for Religious Affairs, Ministry of Religious and Civil Society Affairs, Kazakhstan. The workshop took place on 20 June 2018 at the National Center for Manuscripts and Rare Books. Opening addresses were given by Dr. Halit Eren, Director General, IRCICA; Mr. Ualiev Kuatzhan Serikkazyuly, Executive Secretary, Ministry of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan; Mr. Azilkhanov Marat Almasuly, Executive Secretary, Ministry of Religious and Civil Society Affairs of Kazakhstan.

19 papers were presented, about 15 funds of Islamic manuscripts preserved in the national and university libraries, national museums, archives, research centers and 3 private collections located in Astana, Almaty and Pavlodar, Kazakhstan.

International conference on “Contribution of Kazakhstan to the Development of Islamic Culture”

Themes of the conference were:

– to study the heritage of Islamic scholars from the Kazakh steppe and its significance for the modern religious knowledge;

– the teachings and practices of the Hanafi Madhhab in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, its significance for the modern religious education system;

– place of Kazakh scholars in the Turkic-Islamic civilization;

– the significance of Kazakh cultural monuments for the Islamic civilization;

– Peculiarities of the Islamic architecture in Kazakhstan;

– The influence of Islamic culture on Kazakh musical art;

– Features of the art of the Kazakh steppes in the history and at contemporary.

The opening ceremony of the conference started with the welcoming speech of Supreme Mufti Serikbay Kazhy Satybaldyuly Oraz, Chairman of the Republican Religious Association “Spiritual Board of the Muslims of Kazakhstan”, Supreme Mufti of Kazakhstan. Then, opening addresses were delivered by H.E. Mr. Darkhan Amanuly Kaletayev, Minister of Religious Affairs and Civil Society, Republic of Kazakhstan, and Dr. Halit Eren, Director General, IRCICA.

An exhibition of “Works of Calligraphers and Architects” was opened on the sidelines of the opening ceremony.

– Dr. Seitbekov Smail Suyerkululy, Imam in Manghistau region, Spiritual Board of the Muslims of Kazakhstan (Aktau): Islamic Heritage in Manghistau Region and Kazakh Muslim Awareness

– Mansurov Batyrzhan Berdenuly, representative imam in Atyrau Region, Spiritual Board of the Muslims of Kazakhstan (Atyrau): Islamic Artifacts in the Atyrau Region

– Nusiphanov Ardak Nusiphanovich, representative imam in Almaty region, Spiritual Board of the Muslims of Kazakhstan (Taldyqorghan): The development of Islamic culture in the Almaty region

Conclusion remarks of the conference were delivered by Supreme Mufti Serikbay Kazy Satybaldyuly Oraz, Chairman of the Spiritual Board of the Muslims of Kazakhstan.

Official contacts and visits in Astana

During the period of the Astana conference and workshop, IRCICA Director General Dr. Halit Eren and Dr. Ashirbek Muminov (IRCICA) paid visits to government offices and institutions of Kazakhstan.

• On 19 June 2018, Dr. Halit Eren visited the National Center of Manuscripts and Rare Books, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Kazakhstan and met with the Center’s Director Dr. Saduov Asilkhan Zhumabaiuly. The program of the visit included a meeting with 25 expert cadres of the National Center of Manuscripts and Rare Books.

A Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation between IRCICA and the National Center of Manuscripts and Rare Books, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Republic of Kazakhstan, was signed by IRCICA Director General Dr. Halit Eren and the Center’s Director Dr. Saduov Asilkhan Zhumabaiuly.

The following exhibitions were opened on the occasion, in the presence of Dr. Halit Eren: an Exhibition of Islamic Manuscripts and Rare Books from the funds of the Center; a personal Exhibition of the Islamic Calligrapher Orynbasarov Asylbek; an Exhibition of Handicraft Works of the Master Rysbayev Abaykhan.

• Director General Dr. Eren paid a visit to the Research and Analytical Center for Religious Affairs, Ministry of Religious and Civil Society Affairs, Kazakhstan. The meeting with Dr. Ainur Abdirasilkizy, Director of the Center, was followed by a meeting with 30 specialized staff of the Center.

A Memorandum of Intending Cooperation between IRCICA and the Research and Analytical Center for Religious Affairs, Ministry of Religious and Civil Society Affairs, Kazakhstan was signed.

• On 20 June 2018 Director General Dr. Halit Eren was received by H.E. Mr. Kaletaev Darkhan Amanuly, Minister of Religious Affairs and Civil Society of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

• Dr. Halit Eren met with Mufti Otpenov Nauryzbai Qazhi Taghanuly, Vice-Mufti of Kazakhstan.
