The First International Symposium on the History of the Barbary Regencies held in Çanakkale

The First International Symposium on the History of Western Regencies took place in Çanakkale, Türkiye on 9-10 October 2025. Comprised of Algeria, Tunis(ia), and Tripoli-Libya (Tripolitania), the Barbary Regencies constituted a weighty segment of Ottoman history in the Western Mediterranean during the 16th-20th centuries. Historians from various countries participated in the symposium. Its organizers were the Çanakkale Governorate of the Republic of Türkiye, Pirî Reis University, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ), IRCICA, the Presidency of the State Archives, the Gallipoli Historical Site Presidency, and İÇDAŞ. The opening was attended by Çanakkale Governor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Toraman, Gallipoli Historical Site Director İsmail Kaşdemir, ÇOMÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Evran Karayel Gökkaya, and Pirî Reis University Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ziya Söğüt. The opening address of IRCICA was delivered by the Chief Advisor/Head of Research and Publications Prof. Dr. Cengiz Tomar. Keynote addresses were given by Prof. Dr. İdris Bostan and Prof. Dr. Nasruddin Saidouni. 29 papers were presented during the working sessions by scholars and researchers from various countries, grouped under the following themes: Sources and Historical Debates; Military Power, Navy and Piracy; Diplomacy, Europeans; Administration, Economy, and Socio-Cultural Structure. The book of proceedings, as well as the abstracts booklet, were presented during the symposium.
